Federal Funding for Surveillance Study
Accipiter Radar Technologies Inc. (Accipiter)
in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
(RCMP) has been awarded $200,000 to lead a study to examine the feasibility of using radar networks for
surveillance on the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay,
Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, and the
Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, announced the funding
today in Ottawa.
The research project is funded under the
Public Security Technical Program (PSTP) managed by Defence Research and Development Canada, an agency of
the Department of National Defence. Through PSTP, the Government of Canada is investing $2 million for 10 new
research projects to advance Canada’s capability to prevent and prepare for
safety and security threats, whether caused by terrorist or criminal activity, accident, or natural disaster.
"These projects
will provide DND’s partners in the public security community with the necessary tools to
fight threats to the safety of Canadians", said the Honourable Peter MacKay. "This funding will also act as
a catalyst for innovations in cutting edge technology."
"We are both pleased
and honoured to be able to expand our existing partnerships with RCMP and DRDC
to bring Accipiter’s surveillance resources and expertise to bear on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River
regions to improve the safety and security of Canadians." said Dr. Tim J. Nohara, President & CEO of
Accipiter. "I applaud DRDC for its recognition of the importance of such partnerships in ensuring that
