Bird strike risks are nothing new to aviation, with a long history of serious outcomes such as the U.S. Airways 1549 Miracle on the Hudson which led Accipiter Radar to start working with pilots and ATC to begin innovating a concept of operations technology approach to deliver data directly to ATC, pilots and airlines for mitigating off- airport bird strikes.
Recently, Accipiter Radar participated at the U.S. Aviation Wildlife Conference in Cleveland. In addition to attending and exhibiting at the event, Accipiter’s CEO and Founder, Dr. Tim J. Nohara presented a joint technical briefing with Richard Dolbeer, of the USDA Wildlife Services: “Bird strikes during climb and approach: a need for radar-based management strategies involving multiple stakeholders.”
The briefing emphasized the danger of off-airport bird strikes, the damage they cause in the approach and departure corridors and the alarming number of these incidents. To address this safety concern, pilots, airlines and ATC require role-specific, decision support derived from 3D avian radar that monitors birds off-airport in the departure and arrival corridors.
Accipiter Radar is proposing an all-industry approach to solve the off-airport bird-strike problem by conducting a one-year proof of concept study with a few airports. Airports interested in this initiative would be part of a local working group of representatives from ATC, pilots, airlines and airport operations, all collaborating to define the tactical and strategic, radar-derived, decision support data needed to reduce the off-airport bird strike threat. Findings will be shared with the aviation industry enabling stakeholders to more rapidly influence and develop these new off-airport, airspace deconfliction capabilities.
