Accipiter Radar Technologies Inc. has been awarded the contract to supply and deliver their state-of-the-art, patented 3D Total Coverage® avian radar system for Turkey’s prestigious New Istanbul Airport by developer and operators, İGA Havalimanı İşletmesi A.Ş.

Located in Arnavutköy district on the European side of Istanbul and considered the most significant new airport development in a generation, Istanbul’s new Mega-Hub will eventually service 200 million passengers through its 6 runways, 3 terminal buildings and the world’s largest duty free shopping area. Construction is underway and the first terminal will be the biggest terminal building under one roof, extending over an area of 1.3 million m2 and initially serving 90 million passengers per year. “Istanbul New Airport’s design embraces the latest environmental trends in sustainability” commented Yusuf Akçayoğlu, CEO of İGA Airports Construction. “As İGA, we are building a giant passenger and eco-friendly aviation hub with our internationally recognized approach to environmental sustainability. We are pleased to collaborate with Accipiter Radar Technologies Inc., the pioneer in the field.”

“İGA conducted a very thorough technical assessment of multiple avian radar technologies and determined that Accipiter’s solution was the most advanced and is able to exceed our immediate and long-term requirements” stated Ülkü Özeren, İGA’s Director of Environment & Sustainability. “We are very happy to be working with Accipiter and their highly experienced staff, and look forward to using their system as an integral part of our ongoing sustainability plan. İGA is focused on developing a very safe airport with high international standards and measures which are defined within our state-of-art Wildlife Management Program.”

Accipiter’s Radar Intelligence Network™ (RIN) Platform Technology on which their systems are built will enable total scalability and flexibility for system expansion as the airport continues to be developed; while their suite of Surveillance-to-Intelligence™ (S2I) user applications will deliver a wide range of live, historical and analytical capabilities for risk assessment, mitigation and integration with Safety Management Systems.

“We are delighted to be working with Ülkü and her team on this significant airport project” said Simon Jerome, Accipiter’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “As part of İGA’s technical due diligence, their team visited Seattle Tacoma International Airport, where the Accipiter® avian radar system is fully operationalized. Both Steve Osmek, Manager and Senior Wildlife Biologist at Seatac as well as Accipiter staff were greatly impressed with the scope of İGA’s undertaking and how well prepared and knowledgeable they were on the subjects of airport wildlife management in general, and on avian radar technology specifically. Accipiter’s unique technology will enable İGA to monitor bird movements both on and off airfield, allowing for increased situational awareness and contributing to aviation safety.”
